Poverty line is adjusted for inflation Thresholds were adjusted each year in proportion to the annual increase in the Consumer Price Index By 2008 the poverty line for a family of four was $22,000

Who are the poor More white than black or Hispanic High proportion of the poor are children Few are elderly Almost as many poor families headed by married couples as headed by single women Minority of poor live in central cities Majority spread among suburbs, small towns & rural areas

If total family income is less than the threshold appropriate for that family, the family is in poverty. All family members have the same poverty status. For individuals who do not live with family members, their own income is compared with the appropriate threshold. If total family income equals or is greater than the threshold, the family (or unrelated individual) is not in poverty.
