Jeremiah Our Goal T o read the book of Jeremiah, is to take a journey, a spiritual journey that goes back and forth from the lowest depths of human depravity to the heights and grandeur and majesty of the Lord— the Lord who, from those heights, cries out to all of us: Mi-yittan that such a heart would be in you!

Key Text Jeremiah 9:24 NKJV “ ‘ B ut let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,’ says the Lord.”

The Crisis Continues Quick Look 1. The Crisis of Self Glorification (Jeremiah 9:23, 24) 2. The Crisis of Creature Worship (Jeremiah 10:3-5) 3. The Crisis of Death Threat (Jeremiah 26:11-15)

The Crisis Continues Initial Words T he travails and trials of God’s servant continue. If the people, the kings, and the leaders had humbled themselves before God—the terrible crisis would not have come. Even after they had done so much evil, the door to redemption and salvation stood open; they simply refused to walk through it.

The Crisis Continues 1. The Crisis of Self Glorification Jeremiah 9:23, 24 NKJV “ T hus says the Lord: ‘Let not the wise glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches; but let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness....’ ”

1. The Crisis of Self Glorification Let Him Who Boasts.... I n Jeremiah 9, the prophet began his lamentation because he saw the inevitable catastrophe coming to his country and people. What they would face was going to be the direct judgment of God causing Jeremiah such sorrow. His sorrow, though, was only a small reflection of the pain that God must have felt.

1. The Crisis of Self Glorification Let Him Who Boasts.... “The cross is a revelation to our dull senses of the pain that, from its very inception, sin has brought to the heart of God. Every departure from the right, every deed of cruelty, every failure of humanity to reach His ideal, brings grief to Him.” —Education 263.

1. The Crisis of Self Glorification Let Him Who Boasts.... Wisdom, might, and riches all have their place, but to rely on these things is fruitless, meaningless, and empty. What really matters is to know and to understand for oneself the loving kindness, the justice, and the righteousness of God. What else can give us hope and comfort when everything earthly fails us?

The Crisis Continues 2. The Crisis of Creature Worship Jeremiah 10:3-5 NKJV “ ‘ O ne cuts a tree.... They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with nails...so that it will not topple.... They cannot speak; they must be carried, because they cannot go by themselves. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, nor can they do any good.’ ”

2. The Crisis of Creature Worship Creatures or the Creator? T hese pagan gods are nothing but human creations, figments of people’s own demonically warped imaginations. A prime example of what Paul meant about those who “changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator....” (Rom. 1:25).

2. The Crisis of Creature Worship Creatures or the Creator? Paul contrasts the creation and the Creator. This same contrast which talk about the impotence and weakness of these “gods” in contrast to the true One. How foolish it is to put their trust in these things, which are incapable of doing anything in contrast to the Creator God, who not only created the world but sustains it by His power.

2. The Crisis of Creature Worship Creatures or the Creator? The message is still so relevant. We might not be tempted to bow down and worship man-made statues. Instead, though, it’s still so easy to put our trust in things that can no more save us than these idols could save Judea on the day of judgment.

The Crisis Continues 3. The Crisis of Death Threat Jeremiah 26:11-15 NKJV “ A nd the priests and the prophets spoke to the princes and all the people, saying, ‘This man deserves to die!’... Then Jeremiah spoke...‘Here I am...do with me as you seem good.... But know for certain that if you put me to death, you will surely bring innocent blood on yourselves....’ ”

3. The Crisis of Death Threat A Call to Repentance “ T he inhabitants of Judah were all undeserving, yet God would not give them up. By them His name was to be exalted among the heathen.... It was for the purpose of making plain His merciful designs that He kept sending...the prophets with the message, ‘Turn ye again now everyone from his evil way’ Jeremiah 25:5.” —Prophets and Kings 319.

3. The Crisis of Death Threat A Call to Repentance The message of God is the same to all of us: we are sinners, we deserve punishment. But through the atoning death of Jesus, God has made a way for all of us to be saved. We need to acknowledge our sinful- ness; to claim by faith the merits of Jesus; to repent of our sin; and to put sin out of our lives by the grace of God.

3. The Crisis of Death Threat The Call for Death Jeremiah didn’t back down at all; with the threat of death before him, the prophet did not soften a single word of the message that he had been given by the Lord. We see him now as a man of God who is standing faithfully and with conviction.

3. The Crisis of Death Threat Jeremiah’s Escape How fascinating that the priests and the prophets, the ones who were supposed to be the spiritual leaders, had to be rebuked and challenged by mere “elders” and “regular people” who came forward in defense of Jeremiah.

3. The Crisis of Death Threat Jeremiah’s Escape The acquittal emphasized that Jeremiah was not guilty of those things he was accused of. However, the priests’ and prophets’ hatred became stronger. At a later time they would pounce on Jeremiah with their full fury. He was not completely out of danger.

The Crisis Continues Final Words I t’s so easy for us today to shake our heads at the hardness of their hearts. “Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come” (1 Cor. 10:11, NKJV). We have these examples before us; what will we learn from them?
