Chapter 5 – Lesson 3 Jacob and his mother trick Isaac into blessing Jacob, thinking he was Esau so he could inherit Isaac’s position. Esau vowed revenge, so Jacob fled to Haran. God assured Jacob that he will protect him and that he will inherit Canaan. Jacob prospered, married and had many children. This was God’s way of telling us that God’s people were blessed and continue to grow in number. God changed Jacob’s name to Israel. This was God’s way of distinguishing his chosen people by name. They were the people of Israel, or the Israelites.
