They got married in Vivero de Valladolid palace, in October 1469. They were second cousins and when the wedding happened Isabel was 18 years old and Fernando was 17 years old.

They were named as Catholic monarchs by the Pope Alexander VI in recognition of their defense of the Catholic religion. The Iberian Peninsula was divided in 5 kingdoms: Navarra Castilla Portugal Granada Aragón They didn’t ruled Portugal but they did ruled the rest. They were very authoritarian.

In 1492 the Catholic Monarchs won the War of Granada, and the King Boabdil gave them the keys of the city of Granada.

The catholic monarchs helped and authorized the expedition of Christopher Columbus to discover America, in 1492.

When Isabella died, her daughter Juana became queen of Castile. But they declared her “crazy” so that she couldn’t rule anymore. Then, Juana’s son, Carlos I was crowned King of Spain.
