Find your seat and begin working on your Name Tent quietly Directions for both activities are on the board! 8:45 – 9:15 Have music playing in the background Welcome students at the door and give them their numbered name tents Instruct them to find their seats and begin the study hall facebook activity

2 Finding Your Seat Today!
Find your name on the table in front Match the number on your card to a seat in the classroom (this is your seat) Begin your name tent activity Directions and supplies are already on your desk!

3 Introductory Activity: Name Tents
Fold your paper hot dog style In large letters, write your first and last name on one side Draw 3 pictures that represent you on the other side. Be creative, color it, make it yours!!! Use the supplies on your desk….just remember they belong to the class. Treat these items with respect please, thank you. 9:15-9:25 10 mins on stopwatch Tell students to hang onto these and will collect them at the end of class

6 6th Grade Science Syllabus Contract
Take 3 minutes to look over the syllabus We will read and discuss the syllabus together Special focus on Rules, Expectations, and Procedures.

7 Classroom Rule 1 Stay in your seat unless you have been directed to move Why is this important?

8 Classroom Rule 2 Raise your hand to speak and wait for the teacher to call on you Why is this important?

9 Classroom Rule 3 Use scholarly language: No bullying, derogatory remarks, or cursing. Why is this important?

10 Classroom Rule 4 Keep your hands, feet, and other objects to yourself
Why is this important?

11 Classroom Rule 5 Follow directions the first time they are given
Why is this important?

12 Classroom Rule 6 Accept directions and consequences given by an adult without arguing Why is this important?

13 Classroom Rule 7 Have required materials ready (at minimum a pencil and paper) Why is this important?

16 Entering the Classroom
Classroom Procedure 1 Entering the Classroom Students will line up in the hallway, against the lockers, and then wait to be invited in by the teacher

17 Sharpening pencils Classroom Procedure 2
Students will sharpen their pencils at the beginning of class before the final bell rings You must have a personal sharpener to use at your seat once class begins

18 Find your assigned seats
Classroom Procedure 3 Find your assigned seats Go directly to your seat Begin the day’s warm - up Desks will always be numbered (please do not tear these off the desk) Seating assignments will change throughout the year also

19 Now I know you are ready for my instructions!
Classroom Procedure 4 To get your attention, I will raise my hand: When you see me raise my hand, stop what you are doing Lay your materials down (pencil, handout, etc) Become silent Look at me and raise your hand Now I know you are ready for my instructions!

20 Leaving the Classroom Classroom Procedure 5
Check your desk and the floor = must be clean Gather all your belongings TEACHER dismisses the class, NOT THE BELL! You will be dismissed by rows according to the day of the week Monday’s Row……. you are dismissed!

21 Discipline Consequences
1st offense = verbal warning, name on board 2nd offense = seat change and complete a ‘fix-it’ essay (parent contacted) 3rd offense = silent lunch (parent contacted) 4th offense = loss of privileges (parent contacted) 5th offense = student conference (parent contacted) 6th offense = parent / teacher conference 7th offense = referral to administration

These are just a few of the basics…. As we spend more time in class together, I will explain and model new procedures each and every day Of course, we will have lots of opportunities to practice all of our procedures to ensure our classroom runs smoothly and efficiently!

These will include such things as : Listening and responding to questions Participating in class discussions Indicating whether or not you understand Rotating stations Interactive notebooks

28 Skittles Activity Yellow: What was one favorite memory from this summer? Green: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten? Purple: If you could pick a different first name, what would it be? Red: If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? Orange: If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? 9:40-9:55 15 mins on stopwatch Pass out a skittle to each student tell them if they eat it, they can not participate Ask for volunteers …..if not, I’m pulling numbers out of a jar

Get your science syllabus signed and bring it back to school tomorrow Have your parent or guardian complete the student information sheet and return it tomorrow Get to bed early tonight…. Come back to tomorrow with a positive attitude….. I enjoyed meeting you today. We are going to have a great year together in science!!!!
