Jewellery Saxon jewellery was always very colourful It was also thoughtfully designed and carefully made Glass and amber hung from the ladies dresses The King stone broach is the largest and finest Anglo-Saxon broach of it’s kind ever found.it is made of gold with settings of garnet, blue glass and shell It is over 1300 years old It was worn by women and men Amber is fossilised resin from trees.

Ladies A loose gown fastened round with a belt A full length tunic A cloak round her shoulders with a hood Clothes Men’s A short cloak A knee length tunic with tight sleeves Knee length trousers Leather shoes Poor people wore less clothes made of rougher cloth. They often went barefooted even in the winter. The wealthy: they had clothes dyed bright colours and fastened with expensive broaches.

Each Saxon group had a leader or a chief A strong leader became a cyning Saxon for the king Each king ruled a kingdom and lead a small army There were many quarrels between kingdom to see how was the strongest By AD600 there were five important Saxon Kingdoms. They were Northumbria, Mercia, Wessex, Kent and East Anglia From time to time the strongest King would claim to be Bretwalda witch meant ruler of Britain Settlers and kings

Most people in Saxon times were freemen or slaves A freemen owned land and slaves and a slave owned nothing A slave might be a prisoner captured in war or sometimes born into slavery The richest and most powerful freemen helped the King rule the country, while kings and freemen lived in large halls wooden houses Poor slaves were glad of a cow shed or a barn to sleep in at night. Many slaves were treated badly They could not leave the owners unless they were sold or set free They would get caught and executed if they ran away Freemen or slaves

8. Saxon owners could do what they liked with their slaves They were allowed to beat them or even kill them if they wanted to King Alfred, in the end, put a stop to this but in British areas slaves could claim compensation (money) if they were treated badly The British and Saxons had different grades of slaves and they were allowed their own possessions but not weapons Most slaves in the Saxon kingdom were British, but most slaves in the British kingdom were Saxons Freemen or slaves #2
