Conceptual Physics http://mrlafazia.com/PHYS111/lessons/201011Fall/PHYS111_08.ppt THURSDAY September 16 th, 2010 LESSON GOALS: Complete roller coaster Group Examples Setup and conduct lab on 3-Energy Transformation completing diagram of 3-Energy Trans. (turn in as lab paper!) Assign Homework #4 1/6

Roller Coaster Group Examples (Pull up Roller Coaster questions and project onto board for Group perusal) Note to class: We will begin these by assigning questions to each group in succession. Often, each group will build upon what the previous group just completed. This is actually a relatively fun set of examples (since the results are so satisfying). 2/6

Lab: 3-Energy Transformation Fill-out the following graphic as you collect and analyze the lab experiment: 3/6 USEFUL EQUATIONS: KE = ½ mv 2 PE gravity = mgh (GPE) PE spring = ½ kx 2 (EPE) TOP: PE gravity = ________ PE spring = ________ KE = ________ E total = ________ MIDDLE: PE gravity = ________ PE spring = ________ KE = ________ V max =____ E total = ________ BOTTOM: PE gravity = ________ PE spring = ________ KE = ________ E total = ________  h or x (the same) TOP: PE gravity = ________ PE spring = ________ KE = ________ E total = ________ MIDDLE: PE gravity = ________ PE spring = ________ KE = ________ V max =____ E total = ________ BOTTOM: PE gravity = ________ PE spring = ________ KE = ________ E total = ________ Below spots are for instructor use only: NOTE: There is a spreadsheet which we need to look at to visualize the 3-Energy Transformation, AFTER. FIRST! You must find k for your spring!

HMWK #4: p. 98 #’s 21, 22; 27. p. 99 #’s 10, 16; 17 (#17 requires you to “teach” yourself the POWER formula! It is a basic relationship and an important one. Be ready to use this on our test). p. 102 #’s 57, 58; 60. As usual for these, we will begin next class by collecting the homework and presenting these as Group Examples. 4/6

Recommended Reading: Sections 5.7 – 5.16 (Same old same old + the rest) 5/6

Looking Ahead: 6/6 On Tuesday we will begin wrapping up our Unit One materials. Depending on how far we get, we will likely have a review on Thursday and a Test on that next Tuesday. (This is subject to variation…)
