Systems, conservation of energy Friday, September 4, 2015

Friday, 9/4 Unit1: Tools for Physics  Respond to the following on your warm-up: An Eagle Scout walks 70 meters west to the Canyon wall before turning around and heading back to camp. After walking 40 meters east the scout sprains his ankle. He decides to wait for help.  What is the distance and displacement of the scout while he waits?  When the scout finally returns to camp what is his distance and displacement?  Upcoming dates  Thursday, 9/10 (at 4:00) – last day to turn in missing work for unit 1 (this is a ‘B’ Day)  Friday, 9/11 - Unit 1 test (note this is a date change)  For additional quiz and test dates, see my webpage.

Chrome Books  Pick up a Chrome book and click on ‘energy notes’

Guiding Questions  What is a system?  Describe an open, closed, and isolated system.  What is energy transformation?  What is potential and kinetic energy?  What is energy conservation?  Draw a visual representation of energy conservation (the way you see it).

What is a system  A system is a collection of objects

Open system – objects and energy can enter and leave the system. Closed system – objects cannot leave; energy can enter and leave the system. Isolated system – the total amount of energy in the system does not change and there are no external net forces on the system. Objects cannot enter or Leave. 9 Transformation Example

Potential and Kinetic Energy  Potential Energy – stored energy based on position  Kinetic Energy – energy and motion  Energy can be transformation  Potential to kinetic  Kinetic to potential  Can have both at the same time (it is not all or nothing)

Cool Down  Explain the concept of energy transformation and conservation.

Around the lab table  You will need a sheet of paper to record your thoughts.  With your group, complete the questions at the lab stations.  You do not have to write the questions, however, they may be helpful for studying!  If you have a problem you must show all steps of the GUESS method.  I will circulate your groups to answer questions and answer questions.
