2 Johnson’s Great Society Education programs Head Start, for preschool education for poor families with young children Upward Bound, provides assistance for college students The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, the act increased spending for education City Development programs Department of Housing and Urban Development, helped fund public housing projects Model Cities, gave money to help rebuild cities Health Care programs Medicare, helped senior citizens pay their medical bills Medicaid, helped poor people pay their hospital bills

3 Televised Debates The televised presidential debates helped Kennedy to look young, energetic, and handsome. Nixon had been ill prior to the debate. He looked tired and sick on camera. The televised debates gave people more confidence in Kennedy and helped him win the election, even though Nixon had been in the lead.

4 Kennedy’s Domestic Policies The New Frontier was a group of proposals created by Kennedy. The proposals called for more government spending to improve social programs, including funds for education and job programs.

5 Civil Rights Act of 1964 President Johnson was able to get the Civil Rights bill passed in 1964. Kennedy proposed the law before his death. The Civil Rights Act prohibited discrimination against African Americans in employment, voting, and public facilities. It banned discrimination based on race, sex, religion, and national origin.

6 DOMESTIC - HOME Domestic policies are programs that are instituted within a nation’s borders to address national problems and issues. Kennedy’s domestic programs included education, jobs, and civil rights.
