Cardiovascular System
2
If your heart… Beats about 70 times per minute, how many times does it beat in a day? 100,800 In a week? 705,600 In a year? 36,792,000
3
Blood It brings oxygen, nutrients, and other necessary materials to your body cells and carries waste products away. It’s a pathway through which blood can carry materials throughout your body. It also regulates body temperature and water balance.
4
It’s like city roads… Delivery truck brings the good stuff; the garbage truck takes out the bad stuff.
5
Heart The most important muscle in your body! It’s like the engine to make your car go on the road.
6
Structure of the heart Has two sides Each side has two chambers Atrium- receives blood entering the heart. Ventricles- pumps blood from the heart
7
Circulations Pulmonary circulation Right side of the heart. The pathway that blood follows from the heart to the lungs. Systemic Circulation Left side of the heart. The route that blood travels from the heart to most of the body and then back to the heart.
8
Regulation of heartbeat The average adult’s heart beat is 70- 80 beats/minute while at rest. What’s your resting heart rate? Let’s exercise… Why is your pulse higher when you exercise?
9
Target Heart Rate (220-age) x.60 (220-age) x.80 Those two numbers make up the THR zone.
10
Pacemaker Regulates our heartbeat We have a natural pacemaker, but when ours fails, we can get an artificial one.
11
Blood Vessels If all of your blood vessels were connected, they would extend over 100,000 miles! Arteries carry blood AWAY from your heart. Veins carry blood TO your heart.
12
Blood vessels continued… The largest blood vessel is the aorta. The smallest is a capillary. Aorta—arteries—arterioles— capillaries—venules—veins--vena cava Coronary arteries deliver blood to the heart tissue. Blood vessel diagram
13
Blood Parts Activity Page 410 in yellow book In small groups you will need to create a poster showing what makes your blood part unique. Parts are: Plasma Red Blood Cells White Blood Cells Platelets
14
Blood parts Plasma The liquid part of the blood Red blood cells Carry oxygen from the lungs to the body White blood cells Help protect the body against diseases and foreign substances Platelets Pieces of cells that start the process of blood clotting.
15
Transfusions and blood groups Transfusion Blood is taken from one person and then transferred to someone else. Blood group (4 different types ) O, A, B, or AB If you get a transfusion you need the same type of blood.
16
Your blood could be + or – depending on if you have a certain protein in your blood (Rh factor) Type AB+ is the universal recipient Type O- is the universal donor. Your body is always making new blood. Blood type graph
17
What kind of problems can we have with our heart?
18
When we’re young We have a healthy heart and healthy blood vessels now… But… If we don’t eat healthy and don’t exercise, over time there will be some drastic consequences
19
Food Food has fat and cholesterol in it. If we eat more than our body can handle, the body will store that extra “fat” in parts of the body One of the places that “fat” is stored, is our blood vessels
20
If this happens Then our heart has to work harder because the pathway isn’t as clear as it used to be
21
Arteriosclerosis The hardening of the arteries. Caused by smoking, drinking, and inactivity.
22
Atherosclerosis A buildup of cholesterol and other fatty materials on artery walls. This restricts the flow of blood Can occur in coronary blood vessels or any other blood vessels
23
When coronary arteries are blocked Blood can’t get to the heart If there is no blood going to the heart, that part of the heart will start to die, and this will result in a heart attack
24
High Blood Pressure High blood pressure, or hypertension, is when someone has a high blood pressure for an extended period of time This occurs when one doesn’t exercise and has a high fat diet
25
Hypertension Can cause a stroke This happens when blood flow to a part of the brain is suddenly cut off. This can cause severe brain damage and even death
26
How can you prevent … Coronary heart disease? Hypertension? Strokes?
