2 Native American pottery is created by a number of tribes throughout the United States. Each tribe uses a clay body that is native to their area and has their own distinct style of form and surface decoration.

3 Native American pottery has evolved over centuries, changing as tribes came into contact with other native groups and European settlers. The purpose of creating pottery shifted from being made for use as everyday utilitarian wares to decorative objects to be used for trade. Examples of Jemez Pottery (New Mexico)
