A Day of Celebration & Tears July 4 th, 1826 JQA is pres. 50 th anniversary of Declaration of Independence signed Ppl. still remember the great men S. Adams, P. Henry, & T. Paine J. Adams, B. Franklin, & Th. Jefferson America had problems but was still exciting

A Day of Celebration & Tears US was born w/an idea All men are created = Men, women, & kids were coming to US Rights to life, liberty, & the pursuit of happiness

A Day of Celebration & Tears July 4 th, 1826 John Adams & Thomas Jefferson were still alive Friends & foes Friends= wrote the Dec. of Ind. Political foes Jefferson= Dem-Repub. Adams= Federalist Wrote letters back & forth about the politeness & ideas of both of the men

A Day of Celebration & Tears 50 th anniversary of the signing of Dec. of Ind. Proud of Founding Fathers & JQA is pres. Celebrations were planned all around the country Quincy, MA- wanted J. Adams to speak (spoke of fear) Adams was 91 & ill Washington D.C.- wanted T. Jefferson to speak (inspirational speech) Jefferson was 83 & ill

A Day of Celebration & Tears July 4 th, 1826 Jefferson lay in bed at Monticello in VA Asked “Is it the 4 th ?” Jefferson died Adams lay in bed in Quincy, MA Whispered “Thomas Jefferson survives.” Adams died

A Day of Celebration & Tears Messengers were sent to deliver the news N. from MA to the S. S. from VA to the N. Messengers met in Philadelphia Where it all started at Independence Hall w/the Dec. of Ind.
