AUTOTROPHS Organisms that use energy from the sun or energy stored in chemical compounds to make their own nutrients Processes: 1. Chemosynthesis 2. Photosynthesis i I’m hungry

Where Does Photosynthesis Occur? CHLOROPLASTS

PLANT PIGMENTS Chlorophyll is the green pigment that captures sunlight for plants. Plants reflect green light which is why they are green and absorbs other wavelengths. Other pigments cause leaves to be yellow and red during the fall.

THE PHOTOSYNTHESIS PROCESS Photosynthesis produces sugars & oxygen from carbon dioxide & water using energy from the sun, trapped by chlorophyll in the chloroplasts ReactantsProducts 6CO 2 + 6 H 2 O  C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2

Why is Photosynthesis so Important? It allows energy in sunlight to be available to living things. Light energy (sun) is converted to chemical energy (glucose-Sugar)- the basis for most food chains. Oxygen is a byproduct which is necessary for aerobic organisms to respire and make energy. (Example = You!!!)

PROCESS OVERVIEW 1. CO 2 (carbon dioxide) enters the leaf through stomata. 2. Water enters through root hairs and is carried to the leaves by the xylem (water) vessels. 3. Sunlight is absorbed by the chlorophyll 4. O 2 (oxygen) produced exits the leaf through the stomata. 5. Sugars produced are transported around the plant in the phloem (food) tubes.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SUGARS MADE? The glucose produced by photosynthesis may be: 1.transported and changed to starch for storage 2.changed into cellulose to make cell walls. 3.used as a source of energy for cellular processes.
