1
The Skeletal System By: Zoë Edwards & Laura May
2
Functions Supports body Protects body Stores Calcium & Other Minerals Make blood cells (Produced by marrow) Protects organs
3
Keeping a Healthy System Regular physical activity Nutritious eating plan Posture Lift objects carefully Treat injuries quickly Have calcium & other minerals in your diet
4
How the System Works w/ Other Systems Tendons – Join muscle to muscle or muscle to bone Connecting tissues link bones to muscles so that they can work together to move parts of the body Skull protects brain (Nervous System) Skeleton system supports skin (Organ) Red & White blood cells are part of the circulatory system
5
Joints Hinge– The elbow is an example of this. It is similar to a door hinge. Ball-and-socket– The hip is an example of this. The bone is capable of rotating on an axis. Pivot– The neck is an example of this. It moves by rotating. Gliding– The wrist is an example of this. It allows a bone to slide over another.
6
Common Bones Fibula Tibia Patella Femur Pelvis Lumoar Vertibre (Lower back) Cranium Clavicle Scapula Sternum Theoratic Vertibre (Upper Back)
7
Fun Facts 206 bones in your body Hand has 27 bones Face has 14 bones Stirrup bone (ear) is the smallest bone Humans & Giraffes have the same # of bones in their neck When you were born you had over 300 bones
8
Definitions Joints – Places where 2 or more bones meet Cartilage – Allows 2 joints to move easily, cushions bones, & supports soft tissues (nose & ear) Ligaments – Hold bones in place @ the joints System – The framework of bones & other tissues that support the body
