THE EUROPEAN CHEMISTRY THEMATIC NETWORK ( ECTN) Thematic Networks seek to... Assess curriculum innovation through comparison between curricula Promote discussion on improvements in teaching methods and encourage wider application of good practice Foster the development of joint programmes and specialised courses

ECTN (European Chemistry Thematic Network) Originated in 1996 European Thematic Network (funding from Socrates) Over 130 European Universities, 8 national chemical societies, from 30 countries and with extra-European partners Self-sustained and non-profit Association Member of AllChemE (together with CEFIC, EuCheMS, COST Chemistry, CERC3 and EFCE) www.ectn.net

Current ECTN Projects EChemTest EChemTestLyon, FR Biological Chemistry Biological ChemistryLeiden, NL Image of Chemistry Image of ChemistryKöln, DE Industrial placements, vocational training Industrial placements, vocational trainingNottingham, UK Safety SafetyKrakow, PL Tuning Educational Structures in Europe Euro-Bachelor Tuning Educational Structures in Europe Dortmund, DE “Euro-Bachelor” Multimedia in Chemistry Education Multimedia in Chemistry EducationPerugia, IT Chemistry and Cultural Heritage Chemistry and Cultural HeritageThessaloniki, GR Training new teachers Keele, UK Teaching/Teacher evaluation by students Napoli, IT Links with SchoolsBremen, DE 2 nd and 3rd Cycle studiesKrakow, PL

The ECTN and the ‘Tuning’ Project To aid the development of the European Higher Education Area Transparency - rather than uniformity – to facilitate international comparison and equivalency, but maintain diversity Give learners a real choice in their chemical education, but within a common framework – the Chemistry Eurobachelor

CHEMISTRY EUROBACHELOR Opening access to the European labour market Opening access to the MSc level (with a change of institution and/or country) A degree recognised by other European Institutions as being of a standard equivalent to their own and which will provide automatic right to access (though not automatic right to admission) to second cycle studies

AUTONOMY AND QUALITY Each Institution providing Eurobachelor degree programmes in Chemistry is completely free to decide on the content, nature and organisation of the courses or modules. Eurobachelor approved by EuCheMS (FECS) in October 2003 Programme of 180 ECTS credits, based on outcomes

The Chemistry Eurobachelor - A framework for a European first-cycle degree in chemistry OUTCOMES – Subject knowledge OUTCOMES – Abilities and Skills (a) Chemistry-related cognitive abilities and skills (b) Chemistry-related practical skills (c) Generic/Transferable skills

In summary out of the 180 credits available 90 credits are allocated to the core, 15 credits to a bachelor thesis, 15 credits to semi-optional modules and 60 credits to be freely allocated by the institution The Chemistry Eurobachelor - A framework for a European first-cycle degree in chemistry a European first-cycle degree in chemistry

THE EUROBACHELOR LABEL The chemistry Eurobachelor provides for comparability and transparency, and will facilitate mobility and employability How will this be provided in practice? A certification that an institution offers a programme in chemistry which fits the Eurobachelor framework THE EUROBACHELOR LABEL

Funding obtained from European Commission to establish a Chemistry Eurobachelor Label Label committee established (with elected representatives from Germany, France, UK, Italy, Spain, Holland, Austria, Finland and Czech Republic) First step of the application is a self- evaluation report Second step is a site visit www.eurobachelor.net

SPECIFIC INFORMATION Outcomes:Subject Knowledge Outcomes:Abilities and Skills Content Distribution of Credits ECTS and Student Workload Modules (or course units) and mobility Methods of Teaching and Learning Assessment Procedures and Performance Criteria Grading The Diploma Supplement Quality Assurance

EChemTest A Solution to Certify your Knowledge in Chemistry A SET OF ELECTRONIC TESTS IN CHEMISTRY OF VARIOUS LEVELS OF COMPLEXITY TO BE USED BY INDIVIDUALS TO ASSESS THE EXTENT OF THEIR KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD

EChemTest : What for ? To evaluate Chemistry knowledge and understanding Chemistry understanding in a foreign language To monitor Student exchange programme Professional career progression Life long learning process

European Chemistry Test Professional Chemist Career Development Student in Chemistry Exchange Programme Citizen Life Long Learning Evaluation of your competence and knowledge in chemistry Evaluation of your chemistry under- standing (also in a foreign language) Evaluation of your level of familiarity with chemistry
