Language competency Four official languages: English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil English as first language. The main language of instruction in all school subjects except ‘mother tongue’. ‘Mother tongue’ as second language (Chinese, Malay, Tamil). Spoken but not commonly used in writing. Not everyone is proficient in using keyboard to type Chinese/Tamil words.

IDN Language Tables Language tables and their associated technical rules are important foundations of an IDN registry. Harmonisation of language tables were possible as a result of mutual assistance, collaborations and contributions by various community groups: Chinese IDN Chinese Domain Name Consortium (CDNC) Tamil IDN Asia Pacific Top Level Domains (APTLD) Indic Working Group and International Forum for Information Technology in Tamil (INFITT)

IDN.sg Launch Launched in Nov 2009 Chinese domain names only To provide an avenue for Singapore businesses to extend their reach to the overseas IDN markets in the user’s own language. Sunrise Phase 1: Government Agencies Sunrise Phase 2: For Trademark holders Sunrise Phase 3: For All General Launch (10 Jun 2010) 1200 Chinese Domain Names (Jun 2011)

IDN Fast Track Experience Applied for “. 新加坡 ” and “. சிங்கப்பூர் ” under the ICANN IDN fast-track process. Application sent: 31 Mar 2010 ICANN approval date: 21 June 2010 (about 2.75 mths). IANA delegation date: 11 Feb 2011 ( about 7 mths) IANA’s processes and clarification questions had much overlap with those of ICANN (though they are separate processes) Submitted delegation to IANA and had 2 rounds of clarifications, including a 30-odd questionnaire Going forward, would be good if IANA’s processes could be made more transparent
