By the end of today’s lesson you will understand that there are different types of unemployment You’ll also look at the different costs of unemployment, not only economic but also social

Write down 3 reasons why you think people lose their jobs Write down 2 possible consequences of high unemployment (for individuals or communities)

Short term unemployment Not considered serious Workers moving between jobs Time spent out of work will vary

Will affect industries such as construction and tourism Tends to rise in the winter Unavoidable in a market economy with a variable labour demand

Occurs when the economy is experiencing a downturn Because there is not enough demand in the economy for all potential workers to gain employment

When demand for labour is less than its supply Can be sub-divided into regional, sectoral and technological unemployment.

Activities 1. Read through page 194 to note down different types of structural unemployment. 2. In pairs, discuss, agree and write down answers to question 2 (p 194).

One academic study published in 2001 found that “ Redundancy ranks behind only bereavement and divorce as a life- disrupting event. Even once the immediate trauma is past, the damage persists.”

Unemployment has costs not only for individuals and their families, but also for local communities, taxpayers and indeed the whole economy. Working in pairs, use the information on pages 195 and 196 to consider this hypothesis – “The social costs of unemployment are far more serious than the economic costs.” Report your conclusions back to the rest of the class
