3 Gonzales Texans taunt Mexican troops to “come and take it” (cannon) Texas War for Independence begins Mexican troops are defeated and forced to retreat The Mexicans surrender in San Antonio

4 Sam Houston Leader of Freedom Fighters in Texas Was prepared for Guerilla War Knew the Mexicans would return with a much larger army

5 The Alamo Houston ordered retreat from San Antonio 185 men remain (including Crockett and Bowie) February 23, 1836- Mexicans open fire March 6, 1836- Santa Anna orders a charge and all in the Alamo mission are killed (1 slave and 1 woman live) Mexicans win battle, but lose 1500 men

6 Battle of San Jacinto Santa Anna’s army is split up and tired from their chase Houston’s army surprises and defeats them in < less than an hour (Alamo inspired Houston) Santa Anna captured / Texas gets Independence
