What is a Costume Designer?

Journal 10/23/15 What is the importance of a Costume Designer in the Theatre Business? What do they do? Do you think the job is easy? Why or why not? (5 sentence minimum response)

Who are they? The designer is in charge of developing the image of a character through the actor’s clothes and accessories in the entertainment business.

Who works with a Costume Designer? Director- Discusses over all artistic concept for the show and individual actor. Stage Manager- meets show deadlines with costumes Tech Director- discuss needs for backstage fittings/ find areas backstage for dressing areas Set Design- discusses measurements of the scenery and layout Lighting- discuss lighting instruments used on stage Actors- measure for costumes/ conduct fittings for the show Wardrobe crew- discuss overall design, supervise construction, supervise maintenance, hire backstage dressers

Expected responsibilities: Establishing the production’s time period Reveal details about a character such as social status, gender or age. Create costume plots. Creates costume budget. Purchasing clothes/ fabric for designs Considers adapting stock costumes into their design. Conducts the fitting times with actors Collaborates with costumers
