Introduction to Matter: Properties and Change Lindsey Peele
2
Ice Breaker Directions: Turn to page 5 in your composition notebook or your spiral notebook. This will be your interactive notebook. We will go over this. If you do not have a composition notebook, you will need to buy one for this class by Friday, September 6, 2013. Write the following questions and answer them. These must be at least 2 sentences each. 1. How do I like to learn? Visually, Listening, or Writing, and why? 2. How can I show Ms. Peele I will come to class every motivated to learn? 3. What do I remember about elements, atoms, and compounds from last week? 4. Two fun things I did this summer. After you answer these questions, sit quietly until I finish attendance.
3
Scientific Method The scientific method is a process used to test the validity of theories. Step 1- Make observations Step 2- Identify problem or question Step 3- Form a hypothesis Always a statement Step 4- Test hypothesis Experiment Step 5- Form Conclusions
4
Make Observations Use previous knowledge to understand observations Observe for any problems or differences
5
Identify Problem or Question After making observations, identify the problem or question you have This has to be testable
6
Form a Hypothesis A hypothesis is always a statement NEVER a question Example: When your family makes bread, you notice that flour, water, yeast and a small amount of sugar are mixed and left in a bowl to rise. You've seen bread being made before. You hypothesize that the water and yeast is what causes the dough to rise and make the bread fluffy. This is an educated guess based on past knowledge. Now you can experiment to find out if you are right.
7
Test hypothesis Control- A control group is a group separated from the rest of the experiment where the independent variable being tested cannot influence the results. Variable- Any factor that can be controlled or changed in an experiment. Types: Independent- The one condition that you can change in an experiment Dependent- This variable is what you measure or observe. It is the factor that is dependent on the state of the independent variable.
8
Hypothesis, True or False If your hypothesis is true, then you will move on to the next step to write your theory. If your hypothesis is false, go back and either: Repeat your experiment Change your hypothesis, so it will make your data become true
9
Form Conclusion Analyze data Report results Write your theory

Question: What's a dependent variable? Write question in composition notebook Answer question

Homework Scientific Method Worksheet 15 minutes of reading interactive notebook (vocabulary)
15
Vocabulary Atom- the smallest unit of an element that has the properties of that element Scientific Method- A plan of inquiry that uses science process skills as tools to gather, organize, analyze, and communicate information. Hypothesis- a prediction based on background knowledge saying what is expected to happen in an experiment; an explanation as to why something happened based on what was observed Hypothesis- a prediction based on background knowledge saying what is expected to happen in an experiment; an explanation as to why something happened based on what was observed Observations- the process of making a plan, creating conditions, and then collecting data about predetermined factors
16
Matter Anything that takes up space and has mass (weight) What are the 3 states of matter?
17
State of Matter a particular form that matter can take: The three main states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas.

Tie-Dye Name Experiment Listen for Instructions Clean up and wash hands after experiment Clean up around desk area Do this QUIETLY
