In geographical profiling, the emphasis is to tell you… Where an offender is located **Useful for narrowing down search areas.

What principle is important as a basis for geographical profiling? Crimes are not random – there is a reason they take place where they do.

What is the least effort principle? People will take the easiest option In geographical profiling…the offender chooses the closer location because it is easier.

What is distance decay? Crimes will decrease in frequency as you travel further from the offender’s home.

What is the buffer zone? The area close to home where a person is well known Crime is not likely to occur here

What is a mental map or mental schemata? - internal representations of an area that reflect how a person typically interacts with their environment

Where is an offender likely to commit a crime? In a place where they feel comfortable Familiar – can be learned; “testing”

What is the difference between a muarader and an offender? Maurader – based at home; crimes tend to be spread out Commuter – travel; crimes close together

What do you need to be sure of to use this method? -Crimes committed by the same person -Data captures majority of crimes -Crimes have not evolved -Enough crimes “May not be seen as adding anything to investigations, if their existing methods are at least as good”
