Bible Study Errors #1 By Robert C. Archer

Bible Study Errors Get an overall view Read while making observation Interpret only after Determining the context Defining the words Make application

Bible Study Errors Failure To Rightly Divide It (2 Tim. 2:15) Some just open the Bible and apply what they open to Distinguish between Old and New Testament

Example: Eph. 5:19 Failure To Allow Scripture To Interpret Scripture “ Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” One writer on: “making melody” “Making melody - Greek, psallō, to twitch or twang which, unless we're somehow supposed to twitch or twang our tongue, involves a mechanical device (an instrument).” Two things: If true: all would have to play an instrument Making melody is to be done “in the heart!”

Example: Jno. 3:3-5 What does it mean to be born of water and the Spirit? We are told that water doesn’t mean water and the Spirit operates directly upon our hearts! Allow the Bible to interpret it - Acts 2 explains it!

Bible Study Errors Take Things Out Of Context Example: Holy Spirit to guide into all truth (John 14:26; 15:26-27; 16:13-14) Apostles or us? If us, why the Bible? If us, why the differing views? No, He was speaking to the Apostles
