The scope of the Treaty is all plant genetic resources for food and agriculture J.T.Esquinas

Main feature The Treaty's cornerstone is its Multilateral System of ABS which creates a global genepool of distributed worldwide genebanks which agreed to exchange their material (accession) according to conditions (a standard contract) agreed multilaterally

Policy relevance of the Treaty the only fully operational, international Access and Benefit-sharing System for plant genetic resources; represents the agricultural sector and its specificity within GR policy, while: providing innovative instrument to address simultaneously several global challenges: –genetic erosion and biodiversity loss –rural poverty of small-holder farmers –food crisis and escalation of food prices –crop adaptation to climate change –bottom-up approach to development policy in agriculture becoming a model for numerous other sectors, eg. WHO, UNCLOS, etc;

Three sets of information Information about plant genetic resources (documentation of GR in the MLS and their characteristics)‏ To document and make visible the plant genetic resources in the system Information about agreements entered into and the material transferred (SMTA), which includes the minimum information legally needed to initiate a dispute settlement procedure Feedback information about use of the material (Non- commercial benefit-sharing)‏ To feed non-confidential research information back to the system To facilitate exchange by lowering the transaction costs of acquiring this information and provide legal effectiveness to the Third Party Beneficiary Who? Provider GB/ITS Recipient

Data Store Permanent Identifier Server ‘PID’ Data Store A secured data store will receive through the upload webpage the SMTA reports. This component is still under development. Permanent Identifier Server PID Server is used to obtain Permanent Identifiers (PIDs) by natural and legal persons participating in Standard Material Transfer Agreements (SMTAs). UPLOAD WEB INTERFACE

Provider Web Site A provider web site providing simple search functionalities to allow the selection of accessions and a germplasm request process.

Provider Web Site Ordering Tool Kit ‘OTK’ An Ordering Tool Kit Web site was design linked to provider site. The ‘OTK’ allows users to proceed with their germplasm request following the SMTA principles.

Accession level information, incl. mapping and environmental links

Provides: a single gateway to access the world’s significant collections; appropriate information to facilitate utilization and conservation; functionality to request accessions from providers in compliance with the MLS and SMTA ALIS – accession level information system A new, global way to gather information about accessions in genebanks AND make it available for access and benefit sharing in the multilateral system
