Our Starting Place Sept 2009 saw over 30 multi-disciplined, diverse and passionate team members join COEDI First thoughts back then? - COEDI would centre around “human experience” ---- humans reside in the context of relationships and family -cities needed to be accountable for benchmarks…resulting in individuals’ successes Centre of Excellence for Diversity and Immigration

Our Starting Place Questions? Was COEDI a physical space? Was COEDI a virtual space? Was COEDI a system? Was it all of these or none? How could we harness all this expertise? How could we make a recommendation that was valuable and not a duplicate of something? Centre of Excellence for Diversity and Immigration

Our Starting Place We said in September that we would deliver! We gave ourselves permission to value and seek diverse opinions and differences in perspectives We invested in “conversations”, This resulted in debates, disagreements, competitive opinions Development of a “Terms of Reference” to ground us in our foundational principals of equity Centre of Excellence for Diversity and Immigration

Our Journey COEDI had an overarching commitment to make an informed recommendation Internal experts in Peel External experts in Peel and beyond Presentations, debates, conversations, work sessions, panels Large group, small group, open forum, e-groups, google group White board, black board, flip charts, work sheets Centre of Excellence for Diversity and Immigration

Our Journey Issues are vast and complex Fostering a welcoming community (reciprocity) Access to services Social Cohesion and notions of mainstream and difference Labour market integration, credential recognition, mentoring, Canadian experience, education, employer readiness Racism Citizenship Civic Participation and leadership Quality of Life (inverse relationship between SES and cultural diversity Centre of Excellence for Diversity and Immigration

Our BIG Idea The city of Mississauga will endorse and support the creation of the Mississauga Council for Diversity and Inclusion Centre of Excellence for Diversity and Immigration
