Review: Unit 6: Control Control is the last of our Four Functions of Management (POLC). Control is one of the four primary functions of management. Control is any process that directs activities toward the achievement of organizational goals. Formal Control Systems (also referred to as Bureaucratic Control Systems) measure progress toward organizational goals, making corrections and adjustments as needed.

Four steps: 1. Setting Performance Standards 2.Measuring Performance 3.Comparing performance against the standards and determining deviations 4.Taking action to correct problems and reinforce successes

Review: Unit 6: Control (Continued) Market Controls – Use economic forces (such as budgets, inter-company transactions) to regulate performance. Clan Control – Features employment empowerment and focuses on the ability of motivated employees to be trusted to exercise self-control in their day-to-day activities. This represents a more current way of viewing control.

Review: Unit 6: Control (Continued) Six Sigma is a quality management concept that has the goal of eliminating defects from a company’s product or service. It involves adjusting various aspects of and around the product or service until it is consistently what the customers want and need. The term “sigma” refers to how far a product or service is from being “perfect”, free of defects (relative to customers’ wants and needs). This state of “perfection” or being as free of defects as possible is believed to be achieved at Six Sigma.

Review: Unit 6: Control (Continued) The higher the sigma number, the lower the level of variation or defects. At six-sigma-level, a process is producing fewer than 3.4 defects per million (approximately 99.99966 accuracy)

Review: Unit 6: Control (Continued) External Audit - an evaluation conducted by one organization, such as a CPA firm, on another Internal Audit - a periodic assessment of a company’s own planning, organizing, leading, and controlling processes

Introduction If you have ever led or been a participant in teams, you are likely aware that sometimes teams yield successful results and sometimes they do not. If you haven’t yet been called upon to work on a team or to lead one, chances are that you will be in the future. In the modern workplace, there has been a trend toward conducting business with the use of teams. Today’s managers have the goal of ensuring that their work teams are successful.

Why Groups Sometimes Fail: Ineffective communication Lack of effective chartering, visioning, and goal setting Lack of clarity about roles Inability to keep morale and momentum high Decrease in productivity Lack of trust As a manager, what is your role in increasing the likelihood that your team will be successful?

The Contributions of Teams Benefiting of the organization directly… A team of individuals addressing an issue can experience breakthroughs and develop fresh ideas that may not have been possible with a single individual. Teams can increase production, improve quality, and reduce costs. Teams can enhance speed and be powerful forces for innovation and change.

Different Types of Organizational Teams Transitional Teams - work groups composed of multinational members whose activities span multiple countries Virtual Teams - teams that are physically dispersed and communicate electronically more than face-to-face Traditional Work Groups - groups that have no managerial responsibilities

Quality Circles - voluntary groups of people drawn from various production teams who make suggestions about quality Semiautonomous Work Groups - groups that make decisions about managing and carrying out major production activities but get outside support for quality control and maintenance Autonomous Work Groups - groups that control decisions about and execution of a complete range of tasks

Self-Designing Teams - Teams with the responsibilities of autonomous work groups, plus control over hiring, firing, and deciding what tasks members perform Self-Managed Teams - Autonomous work groups in which workers are trained to do all or most of the jobs in a unit, have no immediate supervisor, and make decisions previously made by first-line supervisors Different Types of Organizational Teams, cont’d.

Instructions for Unit 7 Homework Assignment After reading the Sandwich Blitz scenario in your Assignment Reading and page 247 in your text: Explain how self-managed teams could be used at Sandwich Blitz to allow Jack more time to devote to growing the business. Write your response to the above italicized question in at least 100 words with good spelling and grammar using what you have read in the text and submit to the Unit 7 Dropbox by Tuesday midnight.

Instructions for Unit 7 Class Discussion Consider a position that you hold now (paid or unpaid) or one that you’ve held in the past. Review Table 11.1 by clicking the Table 11.1 button above (available also on page 245 in the Bateman and Snell text) about the traditional and new team environments. Which environment best describes your job? Describe your position based on the dimensions in the table for the environment that applies to you. Write your Initial Discussion applying some paid or unpaid position you have or have had in the past applying it to the Table 11.1 and answering the above questions. Be sure your Initial Post is at least 100 words in length; be sure it is posted before midnight Saturday night and that you post on three different days for full credit.
