Aim: How does an ecosystem maintain itself?
DO NOW: List the abiotic factors in this ecosystem. List the biotic factors in this ecosystem.
2
Requirements for a Self-Sustaining or Stable Ecosystem
Constant supply of energy Q: Where does this energy come from?______________ Q: Is this energy recycled? __________ Plants making glucose, a simple sugar, which contains energy, by way of photosynthesis Animals eating plants & animals eating animals getting energy from food Recycling of materials, by decomposers, between organisms & their environment
3
Important Vocabulary Producers or Autotrophs: organisms that make their own food Plants Consumers or Heterotrophs: organisms that cannot make their own food Animals Decomposers: organisms (some bacteria and fungal organisms) that help decompose dead material and recycle materials back to the environment, in the process of decomposition aerobic process, so O2 is used
4
Energy Producers contain the most energy & have the most energy available for transfer to the next higher level Consumers receive ~10% of energy only 90% of energy is lost as heat energy and organisms also use this energy for life activities Energy flows from producers to herbivores to carnivores
