1 ACT to SAT Transition AGC Presentation Tuesday, October 13, 2015

2 Current Policy/Process Admission requirements: High school GPA of 2.0 higher And ACT scores of 18 or higher on English, math & reading Below a 2.0 requires Accuplacer testing in all areas, or 17 or lower in specific subject requires testing in that subject Currently use SAT equivalencies –receive very few Ex: F15 had 54 SAT scores vs. 5,622 ACT scores

3 SAT Quick Facts Coincidental that Michigan adopts SAT same year as new SAT redesign (juniors will take new test in April 2016) Will publish concordance tables between old SAT scores and New SAT scores and ACT scores in May 2016 No established cut scores – will be up to each institution to develop SAT has partnered with KAHN academy on full and robust preparation materialspreparation materials

4 SAT Quick Facts – cont. Essay is not optional for Michigan students – we will receive copy of each essay Essays are read by two reviewers (not scanned by computer) – if strong disagreement between two on scores, read by third Institution can review full test specifications to determine cut scores.

6 Timeline Entering F16 (begin applying 9/1/15) – took ACT Junior Year, use existing cut scores, take Accuplacer for reading, writing, and math Entering F17 (begin applying 9/1/16)– will take new SAT Junior Year, need to develop new entering cut scores, take Accuplacer for reading & writing, take ALEKS for math Need AGC to review and update cut score policy during 2015-16 academic year to prepare for receiving new SAT as early as September 1, 2016.

7 Next Steps Form cross college committee for development of new SAT cut scores – update of AGC policy Oversight team (Chaired by Eric Mullen & Lori Cook) – seeking additional members Form subcommittees for cut score development for each English, reading & math – seeking additional members Reporting to AGC in January, February & March 2016 Although ALEKS will be administered to all students taking math course regardless of previous scores/classes, need to determine cut scores for those that take placement prior to admissions in a proctored environment and those who take online placement prior to enrollment in a math class

8 Next Steps – cont. Lori Cook will be chairing a separate team to lead the operational transition from ACT to SAT (admissions, enrollment, IT, etc.) Lori will serve as liaison between AGC policy development and operation transition group
