4. History of Building Regulations
The origins of our regulations and Building Control dates back as far as the Great Fire of London in 1666 which destroyed 80% of the city. In 1667, Parliament passed an Act for the rebuilding of London. Surveyors were appointed to ensure the act was enforced. In about 1774, introduction of District Surveyors (Building Inspectors) followed soon after by the formation of the District Surveyors Association.

The first national Building Regulations were introduced in

Building Act introduced in 1984
A major overhaul of the national Building Regulations took place in 1985.
This changed the format of the regulations into a simple catalogue of basic functional requirements.
