Know the Purpose of a Resume To obtain an interview, NOT a job! To give potential employers a positive first impression. A vehicle to relate skills, achievements, qualifications, personal qualities, and interests to the position.

What Recruiters Look For in a Resume An objective on the resume or in the cover letter Good grammar and spelling Bulleted information rather than paragraph form. Experience and /or skills Well-organized

Resume Construction Gathering Raw Materials Inventory all skills, accomplishments, work experience, internships, volunteer work, coursework, etc. Pull out or identify the most valuable on the list as it relates directly or indirectly to the desired position or career.

Develop Foundation (Objective) Position Focused - A position as a Computer programmer. Field Focused - A position in the field of computer technology. Skills Focused - A position where I can utilize my problem solving and analytical skills.

Choosing A Design (Format) Chronological -work experience -emphasizes continuity -effective for those who have little work experience Functional/ Analytical -emphasis is on skills (transferable) or job functions -highlights major areas of accomplishment and strength -effective for those who lack direct job-related experience

Resume Do’s & Don’t’s Do’s -use 8 ½ x 11 paper -use white, cream, beige (neutral colors) with black, clear print -print only on one side of paper -save on a computer disk Don'ts -have typographical errors or misspelled words -send without a cover letter -use personal pronouns -include every school attended, only those from which you have received a degree/ diploma
