Union vs. Confederacy EQ: What advantages did each side have in the war?

North against South 22 million people lived here Had more factories for making weapons & supplies Had more railroad lines so soldiers & supplies could quickly be moved 9 million people lived here (1/3 of them were enslaved & couldn’t become soldiers) Most of the fighting took place here Soldiers were defending land they knew Excellent military leaders

Plans for War Union leaders decided to block southern seaports … why? - The Confederacy would not be able to trade with other countries! ● The Navy would also take control of the Mississippi River; then the Union army would attack in the East & West at the same time

South’s strategy The South decided to fight off northern attacks until the Confederacy could survive as a separate nation Southerners knew that many Northerners were already against the war, so if the Union lost too many battles the Northerners might give up They also hoped for help from Britain & France because they needed southern cotton

The War in the East At the start, both sides expected a quick victory Thousands of men from both sides joined the armies At the First Battle of Bull Run, General Thomas Jonathan Jackson led Confederate troops from the top of the hill. An onlooker said he looked “like a stone wall.” He became known as Stonewall Jackson.

What were they thinking? The Confederate army won the 1 st Battle of Bull Run, but it was worse than expected. People soon realized that the war would not end soon …
