Four Styles of Sentences Simple Compound Complex Compound-Complex **It’s important to have each type of sentence represented in your written work.**

Simple Sentences Contain one independent clause with any modifiers Examples: Evelyn has several small kittens in her home. After school I am going to watch horror movies on TV. **Simple Sentences do not have to be short or boring.**

Compound Sentences Contain two independent clauses joined by a comma and a conjunction Conjunctions: and, but, or, yet, so, for, nor Example: Eduardo needs a new computer, but it is very expensive.

Complex Sentences Contain one independent clause and AT LEAST one dependent clause **Remember that dependent clauses begin with dependent clause markers**

Compound-Complex Sentences Combination of Compound and Complex Minimum of THREE clauses Contain two independent clauses joined by a comma and a conjunction and AT LEAST one dependent clause

Using the Four Styles of Sentences Don’t write a paragraph or essay with all of one kind of sentence. It’s BORING!!! Example: I did my homework. It was interesting. I got an A. My teacher liked my assignment. She called my parents. She told them my grade. I was proud.
