1 Project Description Patrick Weiss, September 2009

2 Context: Syngenta‘s sustainability is depending on the sustainability of agriculture The number of pollinators has been and still is declining significantly. Problem - > 80% of crops depend on Pollinating insects - Sustainable agriculture depends on Pollinators - Environmental issues are high on the agenda of (Authorities, Farmers, Politicians, General Public, Food chain etc.) Causes of Problem - Loss of feeding sites - Loss of breeding areas - Poor management practice - Bee Diseases (Varroa, Nosema) Complication - Growing world population - Rising world food demand - Fixed resources on land and water Challenge - Reverse the trend of declining pollinators -Demonstrate coexistence of environmental sustainability and intensive agriculture - Develop technology + best practice - Educate and engage all stakeholders

3 Already 8 countries joined (PT, ES, FR, CH, IT, UK, DE, HU) Objective 10‘000 ha margins Partnerships w. Governments, Universities, Food Chain etc. Involve Beekeepers Already 8 countries joined (PT, ES, FR, CH, IT, UK, DE, HU) Objective 10‘000 ha margins Partnerships w. Governments, Universities, Food Chain etc. Involve Beekeepers It started in 2001 as a scientific project and is now boosting the number of Pollinators across Europe. Scientific Project 2001-2004 Scientific Project 2001-2004 Increased Bee Population upto 600% Regeneration or rare Bombus ruderatus Butterflies rose 12fold Other pollinating insects rose 10fold Increased Bee Population upto 600% Regeneration or rare Bombus ruderatus Butterflies rose 12fold Other pollinating insects rose 10fold Roll-out in UK 2005-2008 Roll-out in UK 2005-2008 570 Farmers joined 1000 ha of margins Partnership w. Sainsbury‘s Linkage to UK subsidy scheme 570 Farmers joined 1000 ha of margins Partnership w. Sainsbury‘s Linkage to UK subsidy scheme Roll-out across Europe 2009 - 2014 Roll-out across Europe 2009 - 2014

4 A win-win-win Situation for our customers + agriculture: Fulfil environmental obligations + increase of biodiversity + enable efficient farming What we do - Cultivating pollen + nectar margins around fields - Innovative pesticide use - Develop targeted seed mixes - Best management practice - Train farmers + stakeholders - Educate society What we achieve in short term - Increase of Crop Yield - Simplify Field Management - Environmental payment for farmers - Increase habitat for Pollinators - Increase Pollinator numbers What we achieve in long term - Increase overall biodiverstity - Create habitat for mammals and farmland birds - Create a more sustainable farming system - Knowledge on Pollination + Environment - Grow more food from less land
