Similarities Adjectives and Adverbs… …are both parts of speech …both modify other words in a sentence …both add important details

Adjectives Modify nouns Always come before the noun Answer the following questions: – How many? – How much? – What kind? – Which one?

Adjective Examples The young man ran a red light. Which man ran the light? The YOUNG one. What kind of light? A RED one. A quiet panda ate fifty bamboo stalks. – What kind of panda? A QUIET one. – How many stalks? FIFTY – What kind of stalks? BAMBOO.

Adverbs Modify verbs May appear before or after a verb Usually end in –ly, but not always Answer the following questions: – How? – When? – Why? – Where? – To what degree?

Adverb Examples The dog quickly buried its bone. – How did the dog bury the bone? QUICKLY I’ll meet you after class. – When will you meet me? AFTER Barking loudly, the dog greeted his owner. Loudly barking, the dog greeted his owner. – How did the dog bark? LOUDLY
