5 ACCORDING TO SECTION 504 OF THE REHABILITATION ACT OF 1973 AND THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT OF 1990, NO OTHERWISE QUALIFIED INDIVIDUAL WITH A DISABILITY SHALL, SOLELY BY REASON OF HIS OR HER DISABILITY, BE EXCLUDED FROM THE PARTICIPATION IN OR BE DENIED THE BENEFITS OF, OR BE SUBJECTED TO DISCRIMINATION UNDER ANY PROGRAM OR ACTIVITY OF A PUBLIC ENTITY.

10  LOW VISION OR BLIND STUDENTS  USE LARGE PRINT HANDOUTS, SIGNS, EQUIPMENT LABELS  DESCRIBE ANY VISUAL AIDS  PROVIDE CLASS HANDOUTS / RESEARCH GUIDES IN ELECTRONIC FORMAT  SEAT LOW VISION STUDENTS WHERE LIGHT IS BEST.

11  STUDENTS WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENTS  FACE STUDENT WHEN SPEAKING; SPEAK CLEARLY  USE A MICROPHONE, IF AVAILABLE  VISUAL AIDS / INSTRUCTION  REPEAT QUESTIONS AND STATEMENTS FROM OTHER STUDENTS

12  LEARNING DISABILITIES  PROVIDE AN AUDIO TAPE OR PODCAST OF CLASS SESSIONS  PROVIDE LECTURE OUTLINES

13  MOBILITY IMPAIRMENTS  PROVIDE GROUP ASSIGNMENTS  CLASS MATERIAL IN ELECTRONIC FORMATS  POSITION YOURSELF AT THE APPROXIMATE HEIGHT OF A PERSON SITTING IN A WHEELCHAIR  WHEELCHAIR ACCESS IN THE CLASSROOM

14  PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS  PROVIDE INFORMATION IN A CLEAR, RESPECTFUL TONE  ALLOW TIME FOR QUESTIONS

15  GENERAL SUGGESTIONS ADD A STATEMENT TO THE SYLLABUS THAT SHOWS A WILLINGNESS TO ACCOMODATE STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES AND INVITE STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS TO SHARE WAYS THAT THE YOU CAN HELP. WORK WITH THE OFFICE OF DISABILITIES SERVICES ON YOUR CAMPUS.

18 REALITY… UNSOLVED PROBLEMS: ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY HAS NOT KEPT PACE WITH MAIN STREAM TECHNOLOGY THE CAT IS MORE ACCESSIBLE DUE TO THE LIBRARIES ADOPTING & IMPLEMENTING WEB ACCESSIBILITY POLICY DATABASES LIKE JSTOR & PROQUEST HAVE REDESIGNED THEIR SITES TO BE MORE ACCESSIBLE EVENTUALLY PUBLISHERS WILL BE MORE AGREEABLE TO PROVIDING ALTERNATIVE FORMATS THE GOVERNMENT IS LEGISLATING FOR MORE ACCESSIBILITY.
