Kiln furniture – Shelves and posts on which ceramic pieces are placed when they are fired in the kiln. Maturity – The temperature or time at which clay ware becomes hard enough or when glaze reaches the point of complete fusion.

Peephole – An opening in the kiln wall or door to view the progression of the cones during firing. Oxides – Metallic chemicals used for adding color to glazes, slips and clays.

Posts – Pillars of refractory material used to support kiln shelves during firing. Refractory – Having resistance to melting or fusion. Can resist high temperatures without melting. Stack – To load a kiln with pottery.
