1
Collectively the 8 priority areas account for almost 80% of the total burden of disease and injury in Australia
2
The National Health Priority Areas including: - key features and reasons for selection of each NHPA - determinants that act as risk factors – direct, indirect and intangible costs to individuals and communities of NHPAs – one health promotion program relevant to each NHPA The role of nutrition in addressing the following conditions recognised in the NHPAs: o cardiovascular disease o diabetes mellitus o colorectal cancer o obesity and o osteoporosis
3
The function (as a determinant of health) and major food sources of: o protein, o carbohydrate o fibre o fats (mono, poly, saturated and trans), o water o calcium o phosphorus o sodium o vitamin D.
4
The NHPA are diseases or conditions that have been selected by the Commonwealth Government as key focus areas for improvement The health status of Australians have changed over the past 100 years so have the conditions that contribute to overall burden of disease By focusing on these conditions and allocating resources to them, it is possible for further improvements in health to be made.
5
The NHPA aims to involve as many key stakeholders All levels of government -Local -State -Federal /Territory Non- government -Heart Foundation -Diabetes Australia -Nutrition Australia Private Sector -Insurance companies - Medical profession Work together to reduce the burden of disease associate with these conditions
6
Types of Costs Cost of ill health can be classified as being : DirectIndirectIntangible Costs associated with providing health services to people suffering from a disease or condition. Are the expenses associated with the diagnosis, treatment and care of people who are ill, Money spent on prevention
7
Types of Costs Cost of ill health can be classified as being : DirectIndirectIntangible Indirect costs occur as a result of the person having the disease. Not directly related to the diagnosis or treatment of the disease
8
Types of Costs Cost of ill health can be classified as being : DirectIndirectIntangible Intangible costs are things that cannot be measured physically or with a monetary (money)measure, such as pain and suffering
9
Reasons for selection of the NHPAs Prevention and treatment strategies such as medication and therapy can be extremely effective in managing the condition Australia one of the highest prevalence rates 4 th largest contributor to the burden of disease in Australian – contributes to YLL and YLDs. Is predicted to become the leading cause of disability in Australia by 2016. The rates of reported cases of have increased in the Australian population in recent years
10
Reasons for selection of the NHPAs (cont.) Costs to the health care system are considerable – GP visits; medication and constant care Leading contributor to burden of disease 0 – 14 years Most common non-fatal burden of disease in Australia. It contributes more YLDs to the total burden of disease Affects many Australians and rates are predicted to increase significantly as the population ages Relatively low mortality rate and decreasing
