Women “liberating” themselves from traditional expectations and roles and seeking equality in all things Women’s Liberation Is about … Main idea Possible views of people who oppose it May believe there are definite different roles that males & females should have May believe that “a woman’s place is in the home, having children, & taking care of family May believe that the women’s Liberation Movement is messing up a good thing May believe women should be treated with respect but still do courteous things for them Main idea Possible view of people that support it May believe that women should have the same opportunities as men May be live women should get same pay for the same job May believe that it should be equal responsibility for raising children & taking care of home May believe special laws are needed to ensure women are treated fairly Main idea Possible view of an employer May believe they should not employ women because that might get pregnant and leave May believe it doesn’t matter if it’s a male or female as long they s/he does a good job May believe affirmative action is bad because it impacts who they choose as employees May believe affirmative action is a good thing because it ensures fairness

Generally, the best approach is to compare something new (i.e.,Robinson Crusoe) with a topic students are already familiar (i.e., Huck Finn) -- Teacher usually determines the categories of comparison. Begin by having students identify the features of the familiar topic (serves both as a model & knowledge activator) Don’t forget the “So what” section. This is usually the most difficult part for both teachers and students, so it’s often neglected!
