CHESS Basics for Beginners

BOARD SET-UP The letters go across the board in front of you. “White on right!” Each player has a white square in their right corner.

BOARD SET-UP Queens sit on their own color square. Rooks are on the outside. Knights are next to them. Bishops are next to the king and queen Pawns sit in front of the other pieces.

The object of the game Chess is like an army battle. The battle is over when one player captures his opponent’s KING.

Ending the game There are three ways a game can end. 1.Win – checkmate opponent’s king. 2.Draw – if there aren’t enough chessmen to checkmate the king. 3. Stalemate – no legal moves left on board.

Check & checkmate Your opponent might put your king in CHECK. This means your king can be captured on your opponent’s next move and your opponent warns you by saying, “CHECK!” You MUST make your king safe again and you may never move into check.

Check & checkmate Defend against CHECK: 1.Move king to safe square. 2.Block check with another chessman. 3.Capture the piece attacking king.

Check & checkmate If you cannot defend against CHECK: Your opponent will say, “CHECKMATE!” and the game is over.

Chess etiquette Play without talking or fidgeting.

Chess etiquette If you touch a piece, you must play it! When you move a piece, you cannot change your mind once you let go of it.

Chess etiquette Shake hands with your opponent at the end of the game. Win with grace; lose with dignity.
