Do Now– 05/06 If you had been fighting a war for two years and were losing. Your friends/family were dead, and the only reason you were fighting was to keep the country together– how would you be feeling about the war? Why?

HOMEWORK: Go to my website. Look at and take notes on the five sources on Medical Care in the United States. Use these sources to draw conclusions about what the quality of medical was like during the Civil War. This will be used to answer EQ # 4

Lincoln NEEDS a new strategy The North does NOT have a good cause for fighting, people are tired of dying to save the union. Many call to let the South secede. European countries are thinking of giving support to the CSA, they are missing that cotton… These countries are ANTI-slavery, but the war is not over slavery. Lincoln needs to weaken the South. The anaconda plan is not working fast enough— SOLUTION?

The Emancipation Proclamation

RESULTS It was still US policy after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862 that African Americans NOT be permitted to fight in the US military. The US military got a big boost, while not fighting the labor of these men and women freed up other soldiers to fight. Abolitionists who were frustrated suddenly stood behind Lincoln and the war– this was a cause to fight for!! European countries could not support the CSA because of commitment against slavery. Hundreds of slaves died when Southern owners marched large groups into the deeper Southern states where they hoped the Union troops would never arrive.

Answer Essential Question Number 5 on page 20.

Contraband Escaped slaves could stay on with the US army. These people were called contraband. They were not permitted to fight, but those that wanted to were used for manual labor, cooking and any other jobs that needed doing. When fighting got close to their plantations, many slaves would use this as an opportunity to escape. Those who wanted, stayed on with the military, the rest stayed in large camps surrounding Union controlled areas, where the Army and volunteers from the North would help them transition to their new lives.

Harriet Tubman– Union Spy Because of her experience on Underground Railroad, knew land well, was able to sneak past Confederate posts and gain information on their location. Passed that information to the Union army giving them a heads up on Southern movements, this information led to many victories. Also, led many slaves to the Union army to help them be free. The most famous of African American women who worked with the Union military, not the only one.

Please Work on your fifty states/capitals map in the back of your geography packet. We will have a test over this on May 29 th.
