2. Warm-up answer: Fossil fuels (oil, coal and natural gas) are formed when prehistoric plants and animals died and were gradually buried by layers of rock. Once extracted from the earth by drills or mines, they are burned to produce electricity, or refined for use as fuel for heating or transportation.
