CONSTRUCTED RESPONSE PRESENTED BY LEAH PARROTT

English Language Arts [CC Georgia Performance Standards ] will require close analytic reading to construct meaning, make inferences, draw conclusions, compare and contrast ideas, themes, etc., as well as synthesize ideas and concepts across multiple texts will require students to develop informative/explanatory responses or narratives, produce opinions/arguments – citing evidence from text(s) and using standard language conventions, etc.

Mathematics [CC Georgia Performance Standards] will require demonstration of conceptual understanding of concepts, procedural skills and fluency, problem solving, modeling, and mathematical reasoning

TEST SAMPLE QUESTIONS

SO, HOW DO I TEACH THIS?

TEACHING YOUR STUDENTS STEP ONE: TURN THE QUESTION INTO A STATEMENT STEP TWO: CITE 2-3 FACTS FROM THE TEXT (PUT THEM IN YOUR OWN WORDS) STEP THREE: WRITE A CONCLUDING SENTENCE STEP FOUR: REVISE YOUR RESPONSE

Explain which experience or experiences from the story most likely had the biggest impact on Kurt and his desire to go on more adventures. Step 1: Turn the question into a statement. Kurt had several experiences in the story, but the takeoff of the airplane made the biggest impact on his desire to go on more adventures. It is important to teach students to use the words that were used in the question.

Step 2: Give 2-3 facts from the text to prove your answer. The story tells me that Kurt was holding his mother’s hand tightly as the plane began to taxi. The plane was moving faster than Kurt had ever gone before and the lifting off the ground was described a magic. These 2-3 facts should be written in complete sentences and should be put into students own words. The Georgia DOE tells us that students will receive more points for using their own words instead of simply quoting directly.

Step 3: Write a concluding sentence to wrap things up. Even though Kurt had many exciting experiences on his first plane trip, the actual time on the plane sparked Kurt’s love of adventure. Remind students that this sentence should wrap things up, but still stay on topic. It should help answer the question.

Step 4: Revise Your Response Look at the response you have written, check for mistakes and opportunities to make your writing better. exciting Kurt had several experiences in the story, but the takeoff of the airplane made the biggest impact on his desire to go on more adventures. 12 QUESTIONS?

HOMEWORK OUR NEXT SESSION WILL BE OCTOBER 23. PLEASE TRY OUT THE CONSTRUCTED RESPONSE METHOD BY THEN AND BRING ONE HIGH STUDENT WORK SAMPLE AND ONE LOW STUDENT WORK SAMPLE WITH YOU. WE WILL BE CREATING RUBRICS FOR SCORING THESE CONSTRUCTED RESPONSES.
