Write this on page 18 of your STAR book at the top: Section 1: Thinking Like a Scientist What skills scientists use to learn about the world.

Write this on page 19 of your STAR book: 5 Skills Scientists Use 1. Observing By patiently observing chimpanzees, Jane Goodall learned many things about chimpanzee behavior.

5 Skills Scientists Use 2. Inferring When you explain or interpret your observations, you are making an inference.

5 Skills Scientists Use 3. Prediction Predictions are forecasts of what will happen next.

5 Skills Scientists Use 4. Classifying Field notes like these contain many details about a chimp’s daily activities.

5. Making Models This map is a model that traces Jomeo’s journey through the forest. It represents information that would be hard to explain in words. Notice the scale on the map. About how far did Jomeo travel this day?

Scale Models Accurately show the proportions between parts.

2 Types of Observations Quantitative observations- deal with numbers or quantities (how many emails you have, the temperature outside, etc…)

2 Types of Observations Quantitative observations- deal with numbers or quantities (how many emails you have, the temperature outside, etc…) Qualitative observations- deal with your five senses…seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, tasting. (noticing a bike is blue or smelling popcorn popping)

Write the answers to these questions on page 18 in STAR Book 1. Name the five skills that are important in scientific thinking. 2. How do Observing and Inferring differ? Is this statement an observation or an inference? “It must be raining outside.” Explain your answer. 3. Look around the room, write down 3 qualitative and three quantitative observations. How do these two types of observations differ from each other?
