Presentation on theme: "* Look at the first paragraph of the chapter. How does Ishiguro foreshadow events to come in this passage? * What was the ‘tokens controversy’ about?"— Presentation transcript:

* Look at the first paragraph of the chapter. How does Ishiguro foreshadow events to come in this passage? * What was the ‘tokens controversy’ about?

* ‘ All I can tell you today is that it’s for a good reason. A very important reason. But if I tried to explain it to you now, I don’t think you’d understand. One day, I hope, it’ll be explained to you’ – Miss Lucy (p40)

* What impressions do you have of Miss Lucy? What type of person is she? How does she feel about the students at Hailsham? * Items from the Sales come ‘from outside’. Consider the implications of WHERE the items come from, and WHO donates them?

* Consider how the men who deliver the Sale items interact with the students. What does this tell us about public perception of the school and its students? * When chaos erupts at the Sales, the students are told that to have them is a ‘privilege’ and an ‘opportunity’(p43). What are your thoughts and feelings on the Sales?

* Kathy H addresses the reader as if we are having a private conversation with her; she assumes that we are like her, and not ‘outsiders’. How effective is this type of narration?
