Section 5.5 – Using Customary Units of Measure pages 253 - 257

Most people in the United States use the customary system of measurement.

In order to measure an object, you should choose an appropriate unit of measure. Example 1: Choose an appropriate unit of measure. Explain. a. length of a swimming pool b. weight of a baby c. length of a pencil d. capacity of an eyedropper In feet or yards because inches are too small and miles are too large In pounds because the weight is too great to measure in ounces In inches because the length is too small to measure in feet In fluid ounces because the capacity of a cup is too large

You can use conversion factors to change from one unit of measure to another in a process called dimensional analysis. You use equivalent units to write a conversion factor. dimensional analysis. Example 2: Complete each equation. Show all work!! a. 14 oz = _____ lb b. 14 in. = _____ ft c. 14 pt = _____ qt

Sometimes you have to change mixed numbers into improper fractions before converting units. Example 3: Complete each equation. Show all work!! a.3 ½ lb = _____ oz b.3 ½ yd = _____ ft c.3 ½ pt = _____ c

Homework pages 255 - 256 #s 1-29, 57-68 –write problems and answers, EXCEPT for word problems and multiple-choice problems –SHOW ALL WORK! –failure to write problems and/or show work will result in either receiving partial or no credit
