3 What are the four main types of Bullying????

4  Physical: hitting, kicking, shoving, intimidating, stealing/hiding personal possessions  Verbal: name calling, teasing, insulting  Social: spreading rumors, shunning  Cyber: using the internet, mobile phones, or other digital technologies to harm someone

5  Anywhere that the bully thinks he/she can get away with it  Most common locations in schools are the playground, cafeteria, hallways, & locker rooms…why is that?

6  Within the last year: ◦20% of high school students were bullied on school property ◦Numbers were highest for 9 th graders @ 24.5%, and lowest for 12 th graders @ 13.5% ◦Numbers were higher among females @ 21.2%, and lower among males @ 18.7 %

7 NATIONAL BULLYING PREVENTION CENTER STATISTICS COLLECTED FROM A SURVEY DURING 2013/2014 Percentages of Cyberbullying -22.8 % of 9th Grade Females and 16.1% of All 9th Grade Students -18.3% of 12th Grade Females and 13.5% of All 12th Grade Students Percentages of Bullying on School Grounds -29.2% of 9th Grade Females and 25% of All 9th Grade Students -15.5% of all 12th Grade Females and 13.3% of All 12th Grade Students What trends do you notice from the statistics above?

8  People who bully are insecure or have low self-esteem  Bullying usually occurs when there are no students around  Only boys bully  Reporting bullying will only make the situation worse  Teachers often intervene to stop bullying

9  - Don’t cry or get upset  - Tell an adult you trust  -64 percent of children who were bullied did not report it; only 36 percent reported the bullying  - Stick together  - Remove yourself from the situation  - Ignore the bully, don’t give them the reaction they are looking for WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU ARE BULLIED...

10  - Take a stand against the bully ◦- More than half of bullying situations (57 percent) stop when a peer intervenes on behalf of the student being bullied  - Walk away and get an adult  - Support the person being bullied  - Utilize anti-bully programs ◦-School-based bullying prevention programs decrease bullying by up to 25%  - Bring the issue out in the open  - DO NOT USE VIOLENCE WHAT TO DO WHEN SOMEONE ELSE IS BEING BULLIED...

11  The reasons for being bullied reported most often by students were looks (55%), body shape (37%), and race (16%)  children with disabilities were two to three times more likely to be bullied than their nondisabled peers.  81.9% of students who identify as LGBTQ were bullied in the last year based on their sexual orientation  31.8% of LGBTQ students missed at least one entire day of school in the past month because they felt unsafe or uncomfortable  One third of girls and one fourth of boys report weight-based teasing from peers, but prevalence rates increase to approximately 60% among the heaviest students  84% of students observed students perceived as overweight being called names or getting teased during physical activities  If students believe they can make a difference, they’re more likely to act OTHER FINDINGS FROM BULLYING RESEARCH
