1 Eris

2 Basic Facts Named after the goddess of strife and discord (Formerly known as Xena) Has one moon, Dysnomia, named after Eris’ daughter Surface temperatures: -217 ᴼC (-359 ᴼF) to -243 ᴼC (-405 ᴼF) Day = Hours Year = Earth Years

3 Discovery First spotted in 2003 during a Palomar Observatory survey of the outer solar system by: Mike Brown, a professor of planetary astronomy at the California Institute of Technology Chad Trujillo of the Gemini Observatory David Rabinowitz of Yale University. The discovery was confirmed on January 5th, 2005 Deemed a Dwarf Planet in 2006, after much conflict.

4 Size and Measurements Mass: 16,700,000,000,000 billion km
Diameter: 2,326 km (1,445 miles) Average Distance from Sol: 10,120,000,000 km (68.1 AU) Perihelion: 5,765,732,799 km (3,582,660,264 miles) Aphelion: 14,594,512,904 km (9,068,609,883 miles)

5 Environment Rocky and Icy, similar to Pluto’s environment.
This is due to it’s far distance from the sun. Eris’ atmosphere sometimes even collapses and freezes when it’s far from the sun. This causes the planet to be very reflective, making it visibly shiny. Surface Composition: Methane and Nitrogen (Frozen)

6 Dysnomia Takes almost 16 days to complete an orbit
Its orbit was used to help measure the mass of Eris Diameter is estimated to be 8 times smaller than Eris’ Named after Eris’ daughter, Demon Goddess of lawlessness

7 Other interesting Facts
No detailed photos of Eris and its moon exist because it’s too far. Eris is often referred to as “Pluto’s twin” because of how similar they are. Pluto Eris It took more than 1 ½ years to name Eris.
