Oil Paint and Ochre The incredible story of William Barak and the de Purys Pre-excursion presentation

The nature of convict or colonial presence, including the factors that influenced patterns of development, aspects of the daily life of the inhabitants (including Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islander Peoples) and how the environment changed. The role that a significant individual or group played in shaping a colony; for example, explorers, farmers, entrepreneurs, artists, writers, humanitarians, religious and political leaders, and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples. AusVELS Curriculum Links Level 5

The Oil Paint and Ochre exhibition tells the story of the relationship between two families that started in the 1860s. William Barak, a leader of the Wurundjeri people, his third wife Annie and their son David The de Pury family. Winegrowers originally from Switzerland.

What are some of the reasons people become friends today? Make a list.

There are many reasons why Indigenous Australians may have found it difficult to trust European settlers and form friendships. Can you list some examples?

Research the story that goes with this painting. What happened? How were the ideas of ‘trust’ and ‘friendship’ misinterpreted? Batman's treaty with the aborigines at Merri Creek, 6th June 1835 [art original] / John Wesley Burtt. State Library of Victoria

But despite the tensions between Europeans and Indigenous communities, a relationship developed between two families… Click the image to watch the ‘Two Families Side by Side’ film and find out more about the Barak and de Pury families.

How is this story of the relationship between a Wurundjeri Elder and a Swiss wine growing family different to other stories of Indigenous/settler history that you might have heard about? After you’ve watched ‘Two Families Side by Side’, fill out the blank circles on this mind map. After you’ve been on the excursion, come back to it and see if you can add some more circles.
