Oxo-acids Jason, Krystal, Pat, Jon
2
What is it? Oxo-acid refers to any compound containing oxygen bound to hydrogen & at least one other element (non-metal). This combination forms; like the name says, an acid. **All acids are aqueous
3
Naming an acid IMPORTANT!!!! When naming your acid, follow these rules for changing the suffix of the polyatomic atom... If it ends in: ITE your suffix becomes OUS ATE your suffix becomes IC Eg. Nitrate plus Hydrogen becomes Nitric Acid Nitrite plus Hydrogen becomes Nitrous Acid
4
Name ➜ Formula Examples: Nitric Acid ➜ Nitrate ➜ NO 3 - +H + ➜ HNO 3(aq) Sulfuric Acid ➜ Sulfate ➜ SO 4 2- +H + ➜ H 2 SO 4(aq) Phosphorous Acid ➜ Phosphite ➜ PO 3 3- +H + ➜ H 3 PO 3(aq) Remember ITE ➜ OUS ATE ➜ IC To go from the name to getting a formula: * Take acid name, and work back to the name of the polyatomic ion. *Take the formula for the polyatomic ion you found, with the charge, and add Hydrogen to form an acid. * “Cris-cross” the charges from the polyatomic ion and hydrogen.
5
Formula ➜ Name To go from a formula to getting a substance name: * Separate your formula into Hydrogen and one Polyatomic Ion, then “inverse criss-cross” to get the charges. * Take the name of your polyatomic ion, and change the suffix’s. Remember ITE ➜ OUS ATE ➜ IC Examples: HNO 3(aq) ➜ H + + NO 3 - (Nitrate) ➜ Nitrite=Nitrous acid H 2 SO 4(aq) ➜ H + + SO 4 2- (Sulfate) ➜ Sulfate=Sulfuric acid H 3 PO 4(aq) ➜ H + + PO 4 3- (Phosphate) ➜ Phosphate=Phosphoric acid.
