Tips on How to Pronounce Spanish Words
2
All Words Most words are pronounced with out any soft consonants or silent letters. For example, able would be pronounced a-b-l-e, whereas we would normally say it as a-b-e-l. Most words correspond to this rule, though there are some exceptions
3
The letter ‘H’ The letter ‘h’ is silent when being said, especially when it is at the beginning of a word For example, habitat would be pronounced a-b-i-t-a-t.
4
Double “L”s Any time you see two Ls together, you pronounce this like you would the letter “Y” All words with double ‘L’s like ella, ellos and llamas all use this rule
5
The letters ‘G’ and ‘J’ The letters ‘G’ and ‘J’ are both pronounced like a gurgle (huurgh) This is normally at the beginning of a word
6
Double ‘R’s The double R is produced by rolling your tongue This sound is very similar to that of a cat purring
7
Letter ‘ch’ The ‘ch’ sound is pronounced exactly the same in Spanish as in English. For example champion in English and al lechuga in Spanish
8
Letters ‘B’ and ‘V’ Both letters are pronounced with the sound of a ‘b’
9
‘Qu’ These two letters are pronounced like a ‘k’ or hard ‘c’ when put together For example, quiero: ki-e-ro
10
Accents The accents on letters tell you to emphasise the sound where the accent is. For example, esta: e-st-a; está: e-st-aa
