The Naughty List for Listening Calling the subject “dull” or “boring” Criticizing the speaker Getting over stimulated Listening only for facts Trying to outline everything Faking attention Tolerating distraction Choosing only what is easy Wasting the difference between speech and thought speed

What you can do to improve your listening Determine why it is important to you. Take responsibility for what is being said If you can’t hear, Do something about it Listen to what speaker is saying, not doing Look for a pattern of organization Look for main ideas Focus, don’t allow your mind to wonder Take notes

Taking Notes What do I take notes on? –Material written on board –Repeated material –Emphasized material –Word signals –Summaries or Reviews

Taking Notes What should my notes look like? –Everybody is different, preferred methods vary –Suggestions: Make notes brief Use your own words Use tabbing or numbering Leave space for missed info. Leave space for reviewing Keep them organized
